Profile
Dr. Jotaro Shigeyama is currently Human-Computer Interaction researcher at Sony. Previously, he obtained Ph.D at Hasso Plattner Institute with Prof. Patrick Baudisch. He earned Bachelor & Master degree in Cyber Interface Lab with Prof. Michitaka Hirose in the University of Tokyo. He was a scholar of Funai Fountation for Information Technology scholarship since 2019. His project was presented in various top-tier international conference including ACM SIGGRAPH / CHI / UIST. His work has been awarded in such venue such as CHI Best Paper Nomination or SIGGRAPH SRC Semi-Finalist.
Research
My research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction, with an emphasis on Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Haptics. I engineer haptic and virtual experiences that is derived from human perception. My projects include a haptic device that optimally shapes responses based on human characteristics of visual stimuli, a gaming device enabling real-time experiences for visually impaired users, and a VR space design tool tailored for the smallest space usage.
Past Works

Trusscillator: a System for Fabricating Human-Scale Human-Powered Oscillating Devices
Trusscillator is an end-to-end system that allows non-engineers to create human-scale human-powered devices that perform oscillatory movements, such as playground equipment, workout devices, and interactive kinetic installations.

Fastforce: Real-Time Reinforcement of Laser-Cut Structures
We present fastForce, a software tool that detects structural flaws in laser cut 3D models and fixes them by introducing additional plates into the model, thereby making models up to 52x stronger. By focusing on a specific type of structural issue, i.e., poorly connected sub-structures in closed box structures, fastForce achieves real-time performance.

Kerf-Canceling Mechanisms: Making Laser-Cut Mechanisms Operate Across Different Laser Cutters
Getting laser-cut mechanisms, such as those in micro-scopes, robots, vehicles, etc., to work, requires all their components to be dimensioned precisely. This precision, however, tends to be lost when fabricating on a differ-ent laser cutter, as it is likely to remove more or less mate-rial (aka 'kerf'). We address this with what we call kerf-canceling mechanisms.

SpringFit: Joints and Mounts that Fabricate on Any Laser Cutter
We present a software tool called springFit that resolves this problem by replacing the problematic press fit-based mounts and joints with what we call cantileverbased mounts and joints.

Transcalibur: A Weight Shifting Virtual Reality Controller for 2D Shape Rendering based on Computational Perception Model
Transcalibur is a hand-held VR controller that dynamically alters its mass properties to simulate the sensation of various 2D shapes, enhancing user immersion through a data-driven computational perception model.

DualPanto: A Haptic Device that Enables Blind Users to Continuously Interact with Virtual Worlds
DualPanto is a haptic device designed to allow blind users to continuously interact with spatial virtual environments containing moving objects, such as in sports or shooter games.
